There are no comprehensive animal protection laws in China, so many dog meat restaurants in the market source their dog meat in unknown ways. Some are stray dogs, and some are pets. When you're eating someone else's family member, can you really feel at peace with yourself?
On June 13th in Zaoyang, Hubei, volunteers discovered a truck loading dogs for meat while in Yinchuan. They immediately chased the truck for thousands of kilometers, eventually stopping the dog meat farm in Hubei. The scene inside the truck was horrific! Due to the heat, lack of water and food, many dogs had died; they were already dead when the volunteers unloaded them. Other dogs were seriously ill and in poor condition.
It's reported that the truck was carrying approximately 500 dogs, and over 200 of them died! Fortunately, the remaining dogs have been properly cared for by volunteers, and hopefully, no more will die. Without the volunteers' efforts, these dogs would likely have all been eaten. Among the dogs on the truck were several purebreds, clearly pets. Currently, rescuing these dogs relies entirely on grassroots organizations; it's truly hoped that animal protection laws can be established soon!
