Cupid, a lovely and loyal dog from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was abandoned by his beloved family. The family moved away without him. They drove off, leaving Cupid behind, deliberately ignoring his heartbreak and confusion.
Without food or water, it searched everywhere for something to fill its stomach. But wherever it went, it always returned to its front porch. It didn't believe they had abandoned it and hoped they would come back and take it away.
The distressed little dog slept on the porch for weeks, desperately waiting for its owner to return. When neighbors found it, they contacted Anine Guido, the founder of an animal rescue organization, to help find it a home.
Guido told us, “All I know is that its owner moved away, leaving it at home. I asked many people if they knew the dog, and they just said, ‘They moved away.’”
Guido rushed to the address and led Cupid to safety. At first, the dog was frightened and wouldn't let Guido near it. It immediately ran to its porch and began frantically scratching at the door, hoping to get in. Even though she gave it some food, it still didn't trust her.
Until Guido calmly comforted it, telling it everything would be alright. "It seemed to understand what I was saying," Guido said. "It actually came over and sat down, letting me leash it."
Now, Cupid is slowly adjusting to its new environment at the sanctuary, but it is still confused and hurt by the loss of its family. Soon, it will be ready to begin its search for a forever family and a good owner who deserves its love and is willing to reciprocate it.
All dogs deserve the love and care of kind humans, so it's heartbreaking to think that so many dogs have to live with irresponsible, selfish pet owners. However, we are glad to know that there are many good people like Guido who work hard to ensure these poor animals receive the love and care they truly deserve.
