DaDa is a cute and lively black Labrador Retriever. A little over a month ago, its owner took it to a pet shop in Jiefangbei for a bath, and then never saw it again. DaDa hoped its owner would come to pick it up every day, but as the days passed, the owner didn't appear, and even stopped answering phone calls.

Labrador abandoned at pet store

On January 29, a reporter contacted Haidog Pet Shop located in Jiefangbei, Yuzhong District. According to the owner, Ms. Liao, around 10:00 AM on December 24 last year, a young man in his early twenties brought his dog, Dada, to the shop, requesting a bath. The man did not provide any specific information to the staff, only leaving a phone number before leaving.

The man still hadn't shown up by the next day. Ms. Liao called him and told him the pet bathing and lodging fees totaled 140 yuan. The man said his sister would come to pick up the dog soon and gave her a phone number to contact. But that "soon" turned into almost half a month, and the man never appeared. His sister, whom he mentioned, also never showed up.

The host family started playing "passing the buck".

The two parties negotiated the cost of the dog via WeChat.

Dada spends every day at the pet store, where the staff take good care of its food and water, and it's very healthy. This adorable little dog is unaware that it has been abandoned by its owner. Whenever someone comes, it stretches its neck and looks around expectantly, wondering if its owner has come to pick it up. If it doesn't see its owner, it retreats back into its cage and waits quietly.

During Dada's stay at the pet shop, Ms. Liao contacted the owner multiple times, but Dada's owner started passing the buck. The man who delivered the dog told her to call his sister, who then told Ms. Liao to call her husband. Ms. Liao provided her WeChat chat history with this sister from January 4th. According to the record, the sister said the dog would stay for another four days and she would return to pick it up on the 9th, and that she needed to take it for a check-up first. However, when the topic of the 1080 yuan unpaid accommodation fee to the pet shop was mentioned, the sister immediately said she couldn't transfer money via WeChat and told Ms. Liao to contact her husband.

With the year-end approaching, what should we do with our dogs?

Aside from a 500 yuan transfer made by the woman's husband in early January, Ms. Liao made no further payments to the pet shop. Over the course of a month, calls to the man, the woman, and her husband went unanswered or were switched off, and they gradually stopped replying to WeChat messages. The family simply vanished into thin air.

Twenty days have passed since the woman said she would pick up the dog on the 9th. The frustrating thing is that Ms. Liao doesn't know any specific information about the woman, only that she knows from the man who gave her the dog and her social media posts that she runs a restaurant on Beicheng 2nd Road in Wulidian, Jiangbei District.

Upstream News - Chongqing Evening News reporters tried calling the owner of the dog several times, but no one answered.

In such cold weather, 1-year-old Dada was "abandoned" at a pet store. According to the dog owner's WeChat Moments provided by Ms. Liao, the owner posted pictures of playing games, having meals together, and advertising restaurants...

Ms. Liao said that besides the 2,090 yuan owed for the dog's accommodation, she was more worried about DaDa's future. After all, staying at the pet store for an extended period was not good for DaDa. With the Lunar New Year approaching, what would happen to DaDa when the staff went home for the holidays? Ms. Liao said that if the other party continued to be "unreachable," she planned to find DaDa a good home.

Lawyer: It is recommended that the pet shop report the incident to the police, send a letter, and preserve relevant evidence.

Lawyer Li Zhanghu from Shanghai Jincheng (Chongqing) Law Firm stated that if the other party fails to pick up the dog for an extended period, causing actual losses to the pet shop, he suggests that Ms. Liao take measures such as reporting to the police and sending letters to protect her rights. She should also preserve video surveillance footage of the other party picking up the dog, chat logs, police reports, and letter records to clearly establish a service relationship between the two parties, serving as evidence that the other party is indeed in arrears. Because pets are not ordinary commodities, it is recommended that pet shops sign a simple service contract with customers before providing such services, specifying the service period and stipulating that the pet shop has the right to handle the pet independently in the event of a similar situation.
