What should be done with stray dogs rescued from slaughterhouses in sub-zero temperatures?

You may not have heard of Zhang Chenghe, but those who know him say he is a very kind-hearted person. He is over 50 years old and has rescued countless dogs from slaughterhouses by his own efforts. However, winter is the most helpless time for him every year because the dogs have higher requirements for dog food in winter, and Zhang Chenghe has already cut expenses to the extreme.

"Many of the dogs here were rescued from slaughterhouses. They had already suffered countless hardships before finally having a home. Before I started rescuing them, I always thought that the dogs sent to slaughterhouses were either stolen or born strays. Later I learned that many of them were sent to slaughterhouses by their owners themselves."

When talking about the dogs' backgrounds, Zhang Chenghe could only sigh repeatedly!

This three-legged Pomeranian was abandoned on the grass by its owner after a car accident. The poor little dog kept whimpering, struggling to lift itself up and take each step, trying to find its way home... Every time someone passed by, it was both afraid and hopeful...

"The puppy is so well-behaved, it's heartbreaking. Because of the severity of its injuries and the long time that passed, its condition couldn't be reversed. It's now been brought to Brother Zhang's rescue station. Although the home isn't luxurious, it's the best place for it to have a warm home."

"I'm really grateful to Brother Zhang. Without him, I really don't know what would have happened to these stray dogs. Our help as volunteers is so limited," said volunteer Sister Liu, who has always helped Brother Zhang because she sees how difficult his situation is. His kindness and enthusiasm have always inspired everyone!

Faced with Sister Liu's praise, the honest Zhang Chenghe was a little embarrassed. He was not a talkative person. In addition to taking care of the dogs, he also learned some basic pet medical knowledge. He just wanted every rescued puppy to have a happy and healthy life.

From an ordinary person's perspective, Zhang Chenghe's life can be described as "unhappy." He is over 50 years old and all alone, spending his days rescuing and caring for dogs. Many people have mocked him, asking, "Can these dogs call you Dad? Can they take care of you in your old age?!" The kind-hearted man simply smiled and did not refute them.

"No matter how much you say, it's useless if someone doesn't understand you." Like all rescuers, Zhang Chenghe was moved by the dogs' kindness and loyalty, which is why he did his best to help them. Although the road was difficult and his family opposed it countless times, he persisted. He knew that these dogs only had him left.

“Brother Zhang has sacrificed so much for these furry kids. He has moved many times because many places were unwilling to rent to him, and the rent was too expensive. He had no choice but to take his dogs to a small courtyard house in a remote suburb. In the summer, there was no air conditioning and flies and mosquitoes. In the winter, there was no heating. No one would make such a sacrifice if they didn’t really love them!”

Perhaps it was Zhang Chenghe's kindness and perseverance that moved Sister Liu and several other volunteers, who would help him in their spare time, but only to a very limited extent, as everyone has their own families and lives. The small courtyard is basically supported by Brother Zhang himself.

Zhang Cheng wasn't afraid of hardship, since he himself came from a poor background. What he feared most was that these furry kids weren't eating well. Most of the dogs in the courtyard were old, weak, sick, or disabled. In the winter in Northwest China, they basically relied on steamed buns, with only a little meat mixed in occasionally, so there was hardly any nutrition.

Over the years, he's barely even returned to his hometown because of these furry kids. The travel expenses, not to mention buying clothes, are a huge burden. We normal people can never truly understand their hardships and struggles. Some people even say, "Why not just abandon the dogs?"

Yes, many people think of dogs as just objects to be abandoned at will. It is precisely because of this idea that there are millions of stray dogs, which puts so much pressure on the poor rescuers.

We were deeply moved watching Brother Zhang bustling around, patiently caring for each dog. After all, in this society, very few people are willing to make such a huge sacrifice for dogs as he is.
