That afternoon, when the young woman was returning home from get off work, she encountered a truly surprising scene at her doorstep. After parking her car, she saw a stray dog covered in mud standing in front of her house, accompanied by a small puppy. Having never encountered anything like this before, the woman was unsure what to do as she watched the dog and its puppy sitting in front of her door. She hesitated to approach, worried that the stray dog might bite her. Initially, she considered calling out to shoo the stray dog away, but looking at the tiny puppy beside it, her heart softened. Although she had never owned a dog, she knew how pitiful stray dogs were, especially one with its own kitten.
So the young woman patiently interacted with the stray dog. Although she wasn't sure if the dog could hear her, she mustered her courage and walked to the door. The stray dog just sat by the door watching her, while the playful puppies climbed all over their mother, very lively despite their small size. After returning home, the young woman didn't close the door to keep the mother and puppies out. She put down her bag and took out a steamed bun. Since she had never had a dog, steamed buns were all she had. She broke the bun into small pieces and placed them on the ground.
Perhaps because it hadn't had a decent meal in a long time, the stray dog began to devour the food. A small puppy beside it kept balancing the bun on its head, seemingly wanting a taste too, but it was too small and hadn't even grown all its teeth yet. Soon, the dog had finished the bun completely. Seeing that it wasn't full, the young woman ran home and got another bun. While the dog ate, the young woman observed it closely for a long time but couldn't tell what breed it was. Perhaps due to its long stray life, the dog's fur was matted all over, and with the recent rains, it was covered in mud, and the fur on its head was obscuring its eyes.
The young woman wasn't worried about the large dog's survival, having been a stray for so long. But looking at the tiny puppy, no bigger than her palm, she felt a pang of heartache. She couldn't imagine how they had managed to survive. Just as she was feeling sorry for the dog, the stray dog, having eaten and drunk its fill, turned and led the puppy away. The young woman stood there watching them go, the adorable yet pitiful puppy stumbling and staggering behind its mother. It was a truly heartbreaking scene. The young woman thought she would never see the stray dog and its puppy again after they left.
The next morning, when the young woman opened her front door, she could hardly believe her eyes. The stray dog from the day before was back, and this time it brought two puppies! She was stunned. It then dawned on her that the stray dog had given birth to more than one puppy. Looking at the chubby little creatures before her, she was both surprised and overjoyed. She hadn't expected the stray dog to return. Could it be because she had fed it two steamed buns the day before, and now it was "clinging" to her? Then she thought back to the scene when she first encountered the dog the day before. Everyone said that dogs bring good fortune; out of so many houses, the dog had come to her doorstep. The more she thought about it, the happier she became. Without hesitation, she made a decision.
The young woman decided to give a stray dog and its puppies a warm home. Her house was spacious enough, unlike in the city where there wasn't even room for a dog, and the dogs could help guard the house. So, she took out a cardboard box and a piece of chicken. While the stray dog ate the chicken, she quietly put the puppies into the box and carried them back to her yard. Seeing its puppies being taken away, the stray dog followed them into her house. And so, the young woman successfully adopted them. She thought the dog family would live happily ever after, but the appearance of someone shattered this heartwarming scene.
After dinner, while the young woman was resting at home, there was a knock at the door. She opened it to find an older woman with a flashlight. The woman asked if she had found any dogs, and the young woman immediately said yes. The woman then asked the young woman to show her the dogs, saying her own dog was missing. Without thinking much of it, the young woman led the woman to the yard. Seeing someone, the dogs scurried under a pile of corn. The woman crouched down, shone her flashlight inside, and then told the young woman that the dogs were hers.
Although the young woman was initially skeptical, she was convinced when she saw the photos on the aunt's phone. However, she couldn't understand why a pet dog would look like that. While not as pampered as those kept in the city, it shouldn't look like a stray. The young woman then asked the aunt, who explained that the large dog used to belong to her daughter in the city, but she was too busy with work to care for it and sent it to her hometown. The aunt said she didn't like dogs and hadn't taken care of it, letting it roam freely, and that the puppies were only recently born.
Seeing the dog's state, the young woman understood that it hadn't received much care from its owner. Otherwise, it wouldn't be in this condition, nor would it be leading several puppies out begging for food. Anyone who has owned a dog knows that dogs are extremely protective of their home and won't leave unless absolutely necessary. The young woman couldn't bear to see the dog go hungry, and out of kindness, she told the aunt that she should take good care of the dog, especially since it had just given birth to puppies and needed extra nutrition. However, the aunt's next comment left the young woman speechless. She said, "It's just a dog, why take such meticulous care of it? Just give it food."
The young woman was both angry and helpless at what the auntie said. Although she really wanted to help them, these were someone else's dogs, and the auntie didn't seem like a kind person. In the end, the young woman could only tell the auntie that if she didn't want to keep the dogs anymore or couldn't care for them, she could bring them to her place, and she was willing to give them a home. The auntie said she could give one of the dogs to the young woman when it grew up. Although she didn't know if the dogs would be treated well afterward, the young woman said she would definitely visit the dogs more often when she had the chance. Both families lived on the same street, not far away, and this was what the young woman could do for the dogs.
Finally, I want to sincerely thank the young lady for giving the dogs a warm home. Although it was short-lived, it was probably the happiest and most well-fed time for the dogs. Even though they were eventually taken home by their owner, I hope the dogs will be treated well, and I hope the puppies will grow up happily. To all dog owners, I sincerely hope everyone treats every dog in their lives well. If you've chosen to have them, you must be responsible for them. Don't think of them as insignificant just because they're dogs. While they are dogs, they are also vibrant little lives with rich emotions and loyal companionship, just like us.
