Dogs are man's best friend. They are not only highly intelligent but also incredibly empathetic. Sometimes, the bond between owner and dog is even stronger than that between friends and relatives. I didn't believe this before, but with some events happening in society today, people are slowly realizing that sometimes humans can be even worse than dogs. After all, many people are selfish and self-serving. For fame, fortune, and money, people sometimes do many unexpected things, even betraying relatives and friends—a truly disheartening situation.
We are all familiar with the Chinese Rural Dog, also known as the "Tu Gou" (土狗). Due to the continuous introduction of foreign breeds, the status of the Chinese Rural Dog has declined, and now most rural Tu Gou are not well-received, often facing dire consequences. However, for many elderly people in rural areas, these Tu Gou may be the ones who truly understand them, so they still have a deep affection for them.
An elderly man owned a mixed-breed dog, which he had adopted from a relative a long time ago. The relative had intended to get rid of it, but the old man couldn't bear to, so he decided to keep it. Surprisingly, this dog, which hadn't been with him for very long, treated him even better than his family. How could this be?
It turned out that the elderly man had suddenly fallen seriously ill some time ago, but his children all refused to take him to the hospital, citing their busy work schedules. Just as the old man was about to leave, his family dog insisted on coming along. In the end, the old man and the dog traveled for several hours to the county hospital. After a check-up, the doctor said he needed major surgery. At this point, the old man called his children, but none of them had time to come and visit him.
And so, the old man stayed in the hospital alone, accompanied only by his family's dog. When it was time for surgery, the dog was extremely worried, waiting quietly outside the operating room, fearing something might go wrong. Seeing this, the doctors scolded the old man's children for being so unfilial, saying they weren't even as good as a dog.
After several hours of surgery, the elderly man finally came out of the operating room. The moment the doctor opened the door, the dog could no longer contain itself and rushed in as fast as it could.
The dog stood up and lay on its owner's hospital bed, looking at him anxiously with tears in its eyes. For the dog, the old man was its everything. Remembering how good the old man had always been to it, the dog was very sad. Thankfully, the old man's illness wasn't serious, and after the surgery, he would be fine after a few more days of rest.
This dog was incredibly well-behaved, and its companionship made the elderly man very happy every day. However, what he never expected was that none of his children, whom he had raised for two or three decades, treated him as well as this dog, whom he had only had for less than six months. Thinking about this, the elderly man felt extremely sad, yet helpless. Perhaps this is the greatest helplessness in life.
