On April 21, 2024, a heartbreaking incident in Southampton, Hampshire, drew widespread public attention. 43-year-old Carrie Hansford, after moving to a new home with a new partner, abandoned her Staffordshire Bulldog, Rocky, in her filthy and disreputable home, leaving him to starve to death. Rocky's body was found amidst piles of garbage and his own excrement, a gruesome sight.

Rocky was Hansford's pet, living with her for 10 years. However, Hansford, tempted by a new lover, callously abandoned this loyal life. After being abandoned, Rocky suffered from hunger and thirst, eventually dying slowly and painfully in an environment filled with garbage and excrement. The process was undoubtedly long and agonizing. When Rocky's body was found, she was emaciated, weighing only 6.75 kilograms, while her collar was unusually loose, four times her size.

Animal rights activist Mark Knight found Rocky's body in his home in Hansford. He described being met with a nauseating stench when he entered the house. After searching upstairs, he went down to the kitchen and found it piled high with dog excrement. In a corner of the kitchen, he found Rocky's emaciated body, crawling with maggots. Knight stated that in his 10 years of animal rights work, this was undoubtedly one of the worst situations he had ever encountered.

When Hansford was asked why she hadn't reported Rocky's death promptly, her answer was outrageous: "I saw it, but I thought it would disappear on its own." This statement revealed her disrespect for life and disregard for animal rights. Her indifference and callousness were unbelievable; she didn't even feel a shred of remorse for Rocky's death. This attitude further fueled public outrage and ultimately led to her receiving the punishment she deserved in court.

Hansford pleaded guilty in court to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to animals. Despite seeing Rocky's body on December 17, 2022, the day after his death, she took no action and returned to her new partner's home. Ultimately, Hansford was banned from keeping animals for five years, sentenced to four months in jail, suspended for 12 months, and required to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

This incident has drawn widespread public attention to animal rights. A spokesperson for the RSPCA stated that dogs are completely dependent on their owners, and failing to meet their basic needs is illegal. Providing food, water, and a suitable living environment are fundamental elements of caring for them. The suffering Rocky endured from prolonged deprivation of food and water is unimaginable.

Hansford's actions not only caused Rocky unimaginable suffering but also raised public awareness of the enforcement of animal protection laws and animal welfare. It is hoped that this incident will inspire greater public awareness of animal rights and prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
